GSoC14 - Kanagram

Hello,

This is my first blog post about my GSoC project. The past few days has been enthralling and fun filled with loads of learning opportunities. I would like to use this space to share my experience with Kanagram and the work done so far.

Kanagram, is now having a flexible text to speech converter, which is aimed at enhancing proficiency in pronunciation for the school kids. This feature enables proper pronunciation of the words and can be toggled in the "General Settings" section. This feature uses the audio URL of the vocabulary files to play the audio file associated with each word. This audio file contains the proper pronunciation of the words. But the main reason of calling this feature flexible is because of the way Kanagram reacts in absence of any of such associated files. In case the audio file is not present, Kanagram uses kde text-to-speech daemon to pronounce the words. This fallback system is implemented using the KSpeech API.

Apart from this, there has also been an enhancement in the self-assesssment tool. The previous scoring pattern assesssed the users' performance solely on the basis of the number of anagrams answered correctly, excluding the other factors at play like number of attempts, number of anagrams answered incorrectly and number of anagrams skipped. The present scoring pattern takes all of these factors into consideration thus solidifying the evaluation process. The individual score for each of these factors can be assigned by the user in the "Advanced Settings" section of "General Settings", thus making the user, sole judge of their performance.

Next on my checklist, is designing the game interface using QML. I will write more about it in my next post.
